Disc 1

Capitol Crimes

In the world of Jack Abramoff, money was the price of political access—and Abramoff was the broker who could deliver access to the very top. His rise coincided with a Republican push to dominate the world of Washington lobbyists, the so-called K Street Project. Abramoff and his associates took great pains to cover their tracks as they built their empire of influence and greed, but in the end the dots (and the dollar signs) got connected, and the truth began to emerge.

Bill Moyers traces Abramoff’s deals from Native American casinos to unregulated factories in the Mariana Islands in this cogent examination of the staggeringly complex scandal.

Disc 2

Buying the War

After the September 11, 2001, attacks on America, U.S. troops invaded Afghanistan to rid the country of the al-Qaeda terrorists responsible and their Taliban supporters. But some in Washington also worked to establish a link between Saddam Hussein and 9/11 and, thus, a rationale for invading Iraq. Bill Moyers investigates the role of the Washington press corps in these deliberations and why the hard questions were never asked.

Disc 1
Episode 1:Living with Dying
A pediatrician who becomes a patient. A sufferer of Lou Gehrig’s disease, communicating her treatment wishes through eye movements. An undertaker who prepared his father’s body for burial. Through frank interviews, Moyers exposes the complicated forces behind choices about death, asking, “Does prolonging life truly improve life?”

Episode 2:  A Different Kind of Care
As medical advances extend life, even for those with terminal conditions, patients find that pain becomes their greatest enemy. However, our cultural attitudes towards suffering are sometimes used as a rationale to withhold medications—attitudes that palliative-care physicians hope to change in order to make dying less frightening and certainly less painful.

Disc 2
Episode 3:  A Death of One’s Own
This examination of assisted suicide turns an eye to the caregivers, both professional and personal, as they struggle with a terminal person’s wishes and weigh them against their own beliefs and responsibilities. Moyers also converses with patients who wish to hasten death to reduce their suffering and explores the impact on the people they love.

Episode 4:  A Time to Change
The Balm of Gilead project puts the comfort and care of a hospice into a hospital setting, providing dignified, loving treatment for indigent patients. There, the caregivers help find financial resources for the uninsured and support family members who are put to the test. The project offers a potential model for end-of-life care: compassionate, patient centered, and accepting death as a natural part of life.

Disc 1
Episode 1:  The Kingdom Divided
Central America has long been an area of focus for U.S. missionaries. Some have gone to the region to promote social justice for the poor, others simply to save souls. Both approaches can reflect different political agendas, too. How can the same Gospel manifest itself in such divergent ways?

Episode 2:  The Battle for the Bible
The struggles among Baptists and other American fundamentalists have focused around one pivotal issue: the believer’s view of the inerrancy of Scripture. Once persecuted, Baptists now form the largest Protestant denomination in the United States—but one often wracked by controversy over who can call themselves a Baptist.

Episode 3:  On Earth as It Is
For some evangelical Christians, it is not sufficient to have the right to freely practice their faith as they see fit. In the view of Reconstructionists, all areas of public life must be brought under Christian influence and rule. What would this attempt to set up the kingdom of God “on earth as it is in heaven” mean for religious liberty?
