Enemy at the Door

Disc 1
Episode 1:Call of the Dead
A new commander in chief is appointed to the Channel Islands, and trouble begins when Dr. Martel’s daughter, Clare, is arrested for trespassing in a prohibited zone. However, that’s the least of Clare’s problems.

Episode 2:Reception for the General
To Richter’s dismay, the new commander in chief insists on being received socially by the leading families of the island. Richter turns to a conflicted Olive Martel for help. Meanwhile, the activities of Captain Foster-Smythe threaten disaster for all.

Episode 3:Angels That Soar Above
Dr. Martel returns to the island after six months in a French prison. Richter hopes the doctor can ease relations between the soldiers and the islanders, but Martel has relations of a different sort to worry about.

Episode 4:No Quarter Given
German efforts to confiscate all privately owned radio sets raise tensions on the island. Foster-Smythe is determined to resist, declaring that any cooperation with the Germans amounts to collaboration. Soon, he has even more reason to resent the invaders.

Disc 2
Episode 5:Committee Man
The German authorities and the islanders’ representatives have a problem—one that only Dr. Martel can solve, but he refuses to cooperate. However, an act of sabotage provides both sides with a way to get Martel to play along.

Episode 6:Post Mortem
Local landowner Peter Porteous returns to Guernsey after serving a prison term in France. In his eagerness to settle an old score, he again puts himself in the hands of the Germans, placing Dr. Martel in a moral dilemma.

Episode 7:The Raid
A small team of British commandos launches a raid on a nearby island. Once ashore, they learn that their operation has coincided with the arrival of a high-ranking delegation of German officers—and an opportunity to impact the outcome of the war.

Disc 3
Episode 8:Jealousy
After a townsperson’s petty act, the Germans grow suspicious of the owners of a local tearoom and a young German soldier who frequents it. Coming after a deportation decree for all non-island-born residents, the action has consequences far beyond what was intended.

Episode 9:War Game
A chess tournament seems like a good way to restore some normalcy. However, once the occupiers decide to participate, the tournament becomes a matter of national pride. SS man Reinicke is prepared to go to any lengths to make sure Germany wins.

Episode 10:The Right Blood
The arrival of a senior SS officer on the island causes the opportunistic Reinicke to speculate about the reasons for his visit. But the officer’s mission is of a personal nature, prompting Richter to come to the defense of an islander’s rights.

Disc 4
Episode 11:From a View to a Death
A Russian prisoner of war attacks a camp guard and flees into the countryside. The escape affects all who come into contact with the man, and prompts a race between Reinicke and Richter’s police chief to find him.

Episode 12:The Education of Nils Borg
A Swedish journalist arrives to report on the "model occupation" of the Channel Islands—and what the rest of Europe can expect under Nazi rule. The Germans strive to convey just the right image, but the islanders have a different picture to paint.

Episode 13:Escape
Peter Porteous decides he must return to England to aid the war effort. Meanwhile, a series of thefts at a nearby farm leads to a confrontation between the farmer and a German intruder. Porteous devises a way to help both himself and the accused farmer.

Disc 1
Episode 1:By Order of the Führer
Unarmed and demilitarized, the island of Guernsey awaits the inevitable arrival of the German army. Soon, jackbooted soldiers are marching through the streets and the islanders are living under a curfew. When local landowner Peter Porteous decides to "get involved," the deadly seriousness of the occupiers becomes all too apparent.

Episode 2:The Librarian
The Germans encounter another unlikely resister in the form of the local librarian. Major Richter seeks to steer a middle course between his pragmatic police chief, who is more concerned about a developing black market, and the sinister SS officer Hauptmann Reinicke, who is determined to make an example of the librarian.

Episode 3:After the Ball
A dance for soldiers and civilians, organized for propaganda purposes, threatens to turn into a disaster when an 18-year-old girl claims to have been raped by a German soldier. A court martial convened by the Germans promises justice, but the young woman hesitates when she learns the likely punishment for such a crime.

Episode 4:Steel Hand from the Sea
While local physician Philip Martel represents the islanders on the new Controlling Committee, his adult children take more forthright action. His soldier son, Clive, slips back onto the island to bring the fight directly to the Germans, and his feisty and uncompromising daughter, Clare, conducts her own war with the occupiers.

Disc 2
Episode 5:The Laws and Usages of War
Relations between Germans and islanders—and father and son—deteriorate in the aftermath of a British commando raid on Guernsey. Dr. Martel finds himself acting as intermediary after the Germans threaten to execute those who participated in the raid and those helping to hide them.

Episode 6:V for Victory
When "V for Victory" signs start appearing around the island, the Germans determine to crack down hard on this act of civil disobedience. Peter Porteous faces an awful dilemma after suspicion falls on an innocent teenager, who is driven by Oberleutnant Kluge and Hauptmann Reinicke to the most desperate of measures.

Episode 7:The Polish Affaire
Reinicke enlists a Polish prisoner to set an elaborate trap for Sir James Prideaux, a former British intelligence officer with knowledge the Germans would like to acquire. The prisoner has a history of deceiving Sir James, including a prewar affair with his wife. His success this time would put Sir James in the greatest peril of his life.

Disc 3
Episode 8:Officers of the Law
Police chief Kluge tries to clamp down on the island’s flourishing black market, but he needs the help of the local police to succeed. As rationing-induced malnutrition and sickness worsen, Dr. Martel encounters a horrible reality: a young patient faces certain death unless he obtains a vital drug that only the black market can provide.

Episode 9:The Jerrybag
Collaboration reaches new levels as a lonely young housecleaner who works for the Germans takes a special interest in one particular soldier. When she becomes pregnant by him, her neighbors convey their views in the clearest of terms while her lover’s lack of communication leaves her in the most terrible of limbos.

Episode 10:Treason
Against the backdrop of German reverses in the wider war, a general arrives from occupied France to assess the islands. But could he have a larger agenda? What interest does he have in a local retired British army officer? And why has a Gestapo officer traveled all the way from Berlin in the general’s wake?

Disc 4
Episode 11:Pains and Penalties
A man steals fuel from work in order to heat a stove in the derelict cottage where he lives with his sick mother. Such a seemingly minor infringement has tragic consequences for both. And once again, Dr. Martel is saddled with the blame.

Episode 12:The Prussian Officer
When an aristocratic officer tries to humiliate Hauptmann Reinicke by exposing his affair with a French prostitute now living on the island, the SS man plots to get rid of her. After the woman is found stabbed to death, suspicion falls squarely on Reinicke.

Episode 13:Judgement of Solomon
As Dr. Martel prepares to travel to Paris for desperately needed medical supplies, photos of a docked German torpedo boat turn up. With a new by-the-book commander in chief on his way to the islands, Major Richter must pass sentence on three suspected spies, among them the most resistant islander of them all—the doctor’s daughter, Clare Martel.
