The 4 episodes of Season 1 are well-acted period pieces that give us insight into the challenges of enforcing more serious lawbreaking in UK during the early years of WWII. Having said that, the stories suffer from slow pacing somewhat and a lack of gritty suspense, especially when compared with the other Acorn mystery series, or the 'flagship' suspense series, MI-5, which keeps you on the edge of your seat from the outset. No series with the eminent Michael Kitchen will ever be a washout, but you may find that the first-season stories drag a bit.

When I first viewed Foyle's War in the U.S. on PBS Masterpiece Theatre, I was hooked on the Chief Inspector. I discovered Acorn internet television, while surfing the internet for free or reasonably priced download shows and movies. I was so pleased, because PBS is the only programming in the U.S. to see Inspector Foyle. With PBS, viewers can only wait until PBS decides to repeat old series, or whenever PBS does a major fund raising program. I can also browse around Barnes & Noble and Amazon looking for bargain DVD's. I like the Foyle series, because it is a who done it mystery, without the modern day violence. The series takes the viewer back to a simpler time in history, and it is not so easy to figure out who murdered whom, because there is usually more than one murder per episode. What I don't like, is that the other sets of Foy

Being both a mystery and history buff, I'm always drawn to TV shows and movies that intertwine both. Anthony Horowitz weaves a gripping story against the background of WWII. Kitchen plays Foyle lowkey which is opposite of the chaos surrounding him. The balance draws in the viewer and holds him/her till the resolution. Some are expected; others are a surprise. I recommend Foyle to all WWII buffs and to school children studying this time period. I'm looking forward to Season 7 coming to America. Bravo!

As someone born in March 1945 in Scotland, I thoroughly enjoyed this series. The plots, characters and nuanced acting are superb. The village and countryside scenes brought me back to days gone by. I remember bomb damaged sites, coupons and rationing and of course many stories from my parents of their experiences living in a shipbuilding city that was bombed mercilessly. The episode of Broken Souls was just so well produced and Mr. Foyle's empathy toward his Jewish chess partner's life story was portrayed in an understated manner that was very touching. My husband is American but also enjoyed watching the series although he had a little trouble understanding some of the dialects (which I translated for him). An entirely enjoyable experience from start to finish.

Foyle's War series is not just another British whodunit. The time period that it is set in (WWII) has been heavily researched. So much historical detail and many actual events are woven into the stories. I've learned so much about life in the UK during the war - rations, shelters, special equipment and jobs that even civilians were involved with, and more. Very interesting, immersive, and then there's the methodical Detective Chief Superintendent Foyle solving crimes in the midst of it all!

Few actors can display the expressions that make Foyle absolutely perfect in his role. I hope and pray that Set 6 will not be the end of this fabulous series.

Before I started writing historical thrillers, I worked in theatre here in Houston. If it was a period piece, I scoured the city for props and set dressing that matched that of the play. In Foyle, I paid particular attention to those items. The clothing, the motor vehicles, the bric-a-brac that sat around a room are all important to supporting the story. Foyle's production team did a marvelous job of finding period appropriate pieces. The Brits are really first rate at this, I've noticed. One odd piece out of period just jars the viewer. If you're as particular about detail, you will enjoy Foyle for the shear genius of taking you back in time and being comfortable there--while watching a fascinating story unfold.

Foyle's War is one of the few shows that celebrates common sense as well as intelligence. It's faithful to the time period (WWII) it's set in, i.e., little to no "extenuating" circumstances. You do the crime, you pay the time. While I'm rooting for mercy for some poor, misguided and/or situational "murderer" (e.g., caught some bloke shagging his wife and in a fit of anger and anguish, hit him over the head with a rock but didn't mean to kill him), when Foyle does his unsentimental policeman's job and arrests him, although I'm sad, I know that all is well with the world. (lol)

Importance of Setting

The setting is an important element in any story. I love that Foyle is set in Hastings. In itself, non-descript but on closer examination, full of vibrant characters caught in an unspeakable war. The White Cliffs of Dover which appear in several episodes are so majestic. Like the old motts of medieval times, they look like fortress walls. The story uses the winding streets of Hastings to best advantage for the story and characters. Excellent choice!

Importance of characters

Horowitz is a master of creating characters. In Foyle, he's on his game. Being a war child myself, my relatives fought in WWII. That generation lived through a major transition as do the characters in the Foyle series. I can relate to the personal struggles that war brought into each person's life. Some came through bruised but intact; others changed dramatically. Through the pressures of war, Horowitz creates characters that flaunt the law for personal gain while others rise to sacrifice for others. Foyle is one of those characters. It is a must see.
