My wife and I have been long-term fans of Foyle's War on PBS. Unfortunately more recent showings have been set at latenight times not suitable for people who get up in the morning. Foyle's War reson ates with my memories of the World War II era- since I was born in Ireland in 1932 and lived through the austerity times; rationing of food and clothing, limited cooking gas and coal for the fire. It is very nostalgic, and true to my memories. It recals a time that despite all the difficulties and uncertainties was for me a very happy childhood. The tale is so well told that episodes can be watched repeatedly.

I love Foyle's War. There's much more attention paid to the war years than the post-war years, so it's interesting (and often disgusting) to see what the British-American spies were willing to accept to fight Communism. It becomes too much for a man of integrity like Foyle.

I thought the actors in Series 7 seemed a stiff and rather unreal characters. The plot was sort of interesting but I had to view the DVD twice in order to understand what it was all about. I really thought that this additional DVD would have included the characters from the earlier episodes. Thought Sam would marry Andrew and that Inspector Detective Foyle would be somewhat involved with their lives in addition to being involved with the beginning of the nuclear age. Could there be a Series 8?

I bought Foyle's War Set 7 because I enjoyed the first six sets so thoroughly. The historical accuracy of the evocation of the era I personally lived through was exceptional. Set 7 continues the story into the post war years with the same excellent actors, writing, and direction. However, MI5 shenanagens are far more sinister than those of the war years. Fortunately, the violence and dramatic chases are still minimal. I bought the set to view at my leisure and am satisfied with the purchase. Thanks, Acorn.

The long awaited three episode Series 7 takes us into Christopher Foyle's post-war career with MI-5. These episodes were tantalizing, and left me hoping for more. I hope there will be a Series 8. Honeysuckle Weeks continues to deliver the performance of a lifetime.

I have all of the previous seasons and HAD to have the most recent. It IS different, especially in tone. I'm pleased that the writers and actors have been able to keep up the quality of script, acting and production value. It has interesting story lines and set in an era that is wide open for development. It is the nature of the way Foyle's is shot, but I am sad at the lack of connection with some of the characters from earlier seasons. However, it has the most important character: Foyle himself. And anything more than that might be a spoiler. If you liked the series up to now, you should like this one. It IS different in tone. Much darker and less naive: in music, lighting and theme. However, it is dealing with the cold war, so that is appropriate.

I signed up for it in early 2013 and fully expected to wait until November to get the disc... What I didn't expect was to be pestered monthly with a ridiculous obsequious toady email which I complained about EVERY month and had no action from Acorn, EVEN AFTER SPEAKING TO TWO DIFFERENT MANAGERS ABOUT THE SUBJECT, WHO FERVENTLY PROMISED TO STOP THE IDIOCY BUT DIDN'T!! I was and am NOT IMPRESSED! ... Graham Newton, Toronto Canada

This is an extraordinarily well-done series. Production values are superb, performances are invariably first-rate, and all the support systems (costumes, lighting, sets, props, etc.) are thorough, thoughtful, and beyond professional. An example: the tweed jacket worn by a character who was an avid fisherman had a small snag in the fabric of the lapel. An errant fishhook? The location of a temporarily stored lure? Certainly, an inspired costuming touch. The costumes transcend costumes; they become clothing. The same inspired commitment to excellence runs through every aspect of production. It doesn't get any better than this. Thank to ACORN for making this series available!

We have been fans of Foyle's War for a long time, so we knew this DVD would make a perfect Christmas gift for friends. The series takes place in Britain during the WWII era. Besides getting a glimpse of life during this period of time, historical facts and events of the war years are intertwined into the plots. The main characters are very charismatic and draw you into the storyline. As we assumed, our friends enjoyed receiving and viewing this DVD. ACORN, thank you for presenting a vast selection of British DVDs and unique items. Not only are we hooked on watching ACORN, but we will continue to purchase from your catalog and online store.

This amazing series is acting at its best. The nuances of Foyle's expressions are so subtle and revealing. The plots themselves are original and deep, with subtle social commentary; the English characters are true-to-life with no artificial adornment; the scenery is perfect, from beautiful to harsh. Few actors can display the expressions that make Foyle absolutely perfect in his role. I hope and pray that Set 6 will not be the end of this fabulous series.

Before I started writing historical thrillers, I worked in theatre here in Houston. If it was a period piece, I scoured the city for props and set dressing that matched that of the play. In Foyle, I paid particular attention to those items. The clothing, the motor vehicles, the bric-a-brac that sat around a room are all important to supporting the story. Foyle's production team did a marvelous job of finding period appropriate pieces. The Brits are really first rate at this, I've noticed. One odd piece out of period just jars the viewer. If you're as particular about detail, you will enjoy Foyle for the shear genius of taking you back in time and being comfortable there--while watching a fascinating story unfold.

Foyle's War is one of the few shows that celebrates common sense as well as intelligence. It's faithful to the time period (WWII) it's set in, i.e., little to no "extenuating" circumstances. You do the crime, you pay the time. While I'm rooting for mercy for some poor, misguided and/or situational "murderer" (e.g., caught some bloke shagging his wife and in a fit of anger and anguish, hit him over the head with a rock but didn't mean to kill him), when Foyle does his unsentimental policeman's job and arrests him, although I'm sad, I know that all is well with the world. Importance of Setting

M. J. Donahue, Writer of Historical Thrillers from TX on 4/11/2012 3:04:00 PM wrote:

The setting is an important element in any story. I love that Foyle is set in Hastings. In itself, non-descript but on closer examination, full of vibrant characters caught in an unspeakable war. The White Cliffs of Dover which appear in several episodes are so majestic. Like the old motts of medieval times, they look like fortress walls. The story uses the winding streets of Hastings to best advantage for the story and characters. Excellent choice!

Horowitz is a master of creating characters. In Foyle, he's on his game. Being a war child myself, my relatives fought in WWII. That generation lived through a major transition as do the characters in the Foyle series. I can relate to the personal struggles that war brought into each person's life. Some came through bruised but intact; others changed dramatically. Through the pressures of war, Horowitz creates characters that flaunt the law for personal gain while others rise to sacrifice for others. Foyle is one of those characters. It is a must see.

The 4 episodes of Season 1 are well-acted period pieces that give us insight into the challenges of enforcing more serious lawbreaking in UK during the early years of WWII. Having said that, the stories suffer from slow pacing somewhat and a lack of gritty suspense, especially when compared with the other Acorn mystery series, or the 'flagship' suspense series, MI-5, which keeps you on the edge of your seat from the outset. No series with the eminent Michael Kitchen will ever be a washout, but you may find that the first-season stories drag a bit.

I purchased this DVD set, because I am a big fan of British T.V. mysteries, and $9.99, is the lowest price I have ever seen advertised for an entire BBC/Masterpiece series. When I first viewed Foyle's War in the U.S. on PBS Masterpiece Theatre, I was hooked on the Chief Inspector. I discovered Acorn internet television, while surfing the internet for free or reasonably priced download shows and movies. I was so pleased, because PBS is the only programming in the U.S. to see Inspector Foyle. With PBS, viewers can only wait until PBS decides to repeat old series, or whenever PBS does a major fund raising program. I can also browse around Barnes & Noble and Amazon looking for bargain DVD's. I like the Foyle series, because it is a who done it mystery, without the modern day violence. The series takes the viewer back to a simpler time in history, and it is not so easy to figure out who murdered whom, because there is usually more than one murder per episode. Being both a mystery and history buff, I'm always drawn to TV shows and movies that intertwine both. Anthony Horowitz weaves a gripping story against the background of WWII. Kitchen plays Foyle lowkey which is opposite of the chaos surrounding him. The balance draws in the viewer and holds him/her till the resolution. Some are expected; others are a surprise. I recommend Foyle to all WWII buffs and to school children studying this time period. I'm looking forward to Season 7 coming to America. Bravo!
