Jack Taylor

"Terrific" - Australian

Kicked off Ireland’s police force for booze-related infractions, now working as a “finder” (private eye) in Galway, Jack Taylor takes on cases the cops won’t touch. Based on the bestselling crime fiction by Ken Bruen, this acclaimed Irish series stars Iain Glen (Game of Thrones, Downton Abbey) as Taylor: battered, disheveled, hard-boiled, and a softhearted defender of the lost and broken. Set includes three feature-length mysteries: The Guards, The Pikemen, and The Magdalen Martyrs. 4 ½ hrs, 3 DVDs, SDH. Mature audiences.

Disc 1

The Dramatist

When a drama student falls to her death, the police dismiss it as a suicide and her as a drug user. But her literature professor disagrees and hires Taylor to look deeper into the case. The murder of a second female student establishes a link between the two deaths and the ancient Irish tale “Deirdre of the Sorrows.” A serial killer seems set to keep adding to the misery.

Disc 2

Priest

A priest is beheaded in church while kneeling before the altar. Fearing he's next, another priest asks Taylor for help. Taylor investigates two of the dead man's former parishioners, one now a successful businessman, the other a drug addict. As details of the case emerge, this tale of revenge comes to a shocking conclusion.

Disc 3

Shot Down

When the police make no headway in the shooting death of a woman, Taylor volunteers his services to her grieving family. He believes the woman's 11-year-old daughter saw the killer and may now be in danger. My husband and I watched Season One a while back, loved it and have been anxiously awaiting subsequent seasons. Jack Taylor is very human, not some super hero. He has deep feelings, he emotes, he fights his inner demons, and he helps people, often at expense to himself. The plots are good, the characters are very well cast and acted, the dialogue and settings are perfect. Often, the settings are like an additional character. It's great television.

Unlike most US shows where people die with perfect hair and make up and the bad guys wear black and there is always a perfect hero this show is what it should be. The hero is flawed and his alcoholism makes him a harder person to sympathize with. His friend and female Garda puts herself on the line for him because she sees beyond the drink and believes that he is still helping people. The film is not shot in the bright and sunny day of Galway but at night mostly in pubs and on dark streets. They flash touches of the new Ireland with occasional scenes shot in the new hotels etc. but this is essentially about a country that has, like any other, a side which is both good and bad and all parts in between. If your preference is the US version where shades of grey seldom exist then this series is not for you. If, however, you recognize that violence should make you uncomfortable then sit down and enjoy. I also thank Bravo for carrying this series in the US.

More please!

Bought it for husband who has read all of Ken Bruen's works. He concurred that this was excellent rendition. Sometimes a bit long on the arty film parts, but characters, acting, script quite good. Glen excellent. Beautifully shot. Rich with Ireland-- rain drenched, literate, depressed, depraved, dreary, and dynamic.

It would seem that putting Ken Bruen's crime novels on the screen would be an impossibility, yet this series manages to do justice to his writing primarily due to the actors involved. Bruen's readers have all created our own image of what Jack Taylor is like & whether it fits Iain Glen or not becomes immaterial once you see him in action - he is a perfect Jack Taylor. Can't wait for series #2 to become available.

I'd seen Iain Glen in Downton Abbey and thoroughly enjoyed his work, so I thought I'd purchase the Jack Taylor set based on that. This series is gritty and rough, quite a departure from Iain's work in Downton Abbey. He's a versatile actor and I hope to see more of his work.
