Disc 1
Adam and Charles Trask grow up in the shadow of their strong-willed father, Cyrus, a former Union soldier. Cyrus prefers gentle and good-natured Adam, inciting jealousy in his younger son, Charles. Cyrus signs Adam up for the cavalry, while Charles stays home to work the family farm. Reuniting years later, the brothers live in relative peace until a beautiful woman nearly beaten to death crawls to their doorstep. Adam nurses her back to health and falls blindly in love. But Cathy hides a cruel past, which only Charles suspects.

Disc 2
Newlyweds and expectant parents, Adam and Cathy move to Edenic farmland in California. Cathy gives birth to twin boys but soon afterward deserts the family, leaving Adam with a despairing heart and two infants to care for. Aided by the friendship of his neighbor Sam Hamilton and his cook, Lee, Adam finally moves on. Then Cathy—now called “Kate” and the madam of an upscale brothel—reveals a devastating secret.

Disc 3
Adam’s sons, Cal and Aron, have a relationship that mirrors his own sibling strife. Aron, his father’s favorite, has a pretty childhood sweetheart and a spiritual calling; Cal bristles at his brother’s seeming perfection. When Adam’s failed business venture depletes the family fortune, Cal decides to earn it back and win his father’s love. He also seeks out his mother, whom he had long assumed was dead. Cal’s quest leads both to tragedy and the opportunity for redemption.
