Disc 1

Episode 1:  All Tattered and Torn

The discovery of dismembered body parts encased in a concrete block poses a seemingly impenetrable mystery, but Murdoch chips away at the case, despite the resistance of prickly pathologist Dr. Llewellyn Francis. The detective soon unearths clues to a decades-old crime with unlikely accomplices.

Episode 2:  Kommando

A dead soldier found hanging from a tree with his head twisted 180 degrees points Murdoch to a secret plot in the Canadian military. The investigation puts the constabulary at odds with both the British and Canadian armed forces and prompts an unlikely alliance between Murdoch and Dr. Francis.

Episode 3:  Buffalo Shuffle

Murdoch reunites with his old flame, Dr. Julia Ogden, in Buffalo, New York, to investigate the death of a young patient. In short order, Murdoch’s feelings for Julia heat up, as do suspicions surrounding one of Ogden’s colleagues. In Toronto, a constabulary break-in raises troubling questions.

Episode 4:  Downstairs, Upstairs

Wealthy patriarch Percival Jenkins is found facedown in a bowl of porridge, pulling Murdoch into a world of privilege and resentment. Murdoch untangles the twisted web connecting the servants and family members and finds that each has a motive to kill the master of the manor.

Disc 2

Episode 5:  Monsieur Murdoch

The disappearance of a visiting Parisian girl thrusts Murdoch into an odd partnership with French Detective Marcel Guillaume, a real-life inspiration for the fictional Inspector Maigret. Brackenreid, meanwhile, ponders a political career.

Episode 6:  Dead End Street

Murdoch suspects that a detailed miniature streetscape of a Toronto neighborhood contains clues to a homicide. But the artist is an “idiot savant,” unable to finger the killer. It’s up to Murdoch to get a clear picture of a street roiling with conflict, deceit, and murder.

Episode 7:  Confederate Treasure

Murdoch’s investigation into the murder of a defense minister raises the hackles of the detective’s rival, spy Terrence Meyers. Could the inquiry ignite war with the United States? The explosive revelations put Murdoch’s technical wizardry to the test in a race for Civil War booty.

Disc 3

Episode 8:  Dial M for Murdoch

A phone operator with a penchant for amateur sleuthing claims she overheard the strangulation death of a young woman. Is the wannabe detective crying wolf, or is a real predator on the loose in Toronto? Murdoch taps into the phone system to prevent a killer from striking again.

Episode 9:  The Black Hand

Murdoch’s old friend Anna Fulford gets engaged to a New York businessman, but plans for Niagara nuptials come crashing down when Anna’s fiancé turns up dead. Murdoch suspects the Black Hand, a ruthless pre-Mafia organization. Can Murdoch keep Anna safe from murderous mobsters?

Episode 10:  Voices

Religion forms an unholy union with murder when a priest’s corpse turns up in a convent overseen by someone closely connected to Murdoch. The detective learns that the victim isn’t who he appears to be, and a cloistered nun has divine revelations that may provide clues to the murder.

Disc 4

Episode 11:  Bloodlust

Toronto or Transylvania? A dead body’s dramatic blood loss shines light on a vampire craze among schoolgirls inspired by Bram Stoker’s Dracula. Murdoch tracks a fanged suspect, despite lurid stories by Toronto Gazette reporter Paddy Glynn and the incredulity of Inspector Brackenreid.

Episode 12:  Kissing Bandit

A dashing masked robber steals from banks and gives to the poor à la Robin Hood, but Toronto is no Sherwood Forest. Undaunted by the sensational reporting of Paddy Glynn or the detective’s longing for soon-to-be-wed Dr. Ogden, Murdoch doggedly probes the crimes.

Episode 13:  Murdoch in Wonderland

Murdoch steps through the looking glass when he awakens to find he’s a suspect in a murder committed during the previous night’s Alice in Wonderland party. As Dr. Ogden’s wedding to Dr. Darcy Garland nears, she faces her own struggle upon learning of Murdoch’s feelings for her.

Murdoch's Mysteries

5 Stars

Jan from CA on 7/5/2011 2:59:45 PM wrote:

I loved the first season so much, I bought the next two seasons. I like the fact that Murdoch uses his reasoning abilities for his work, but forgets them when it comes to women. Even though the time period is rather Victorian, the characters polite, the solving of the murders is almost modern. An added treat is the humor shown now and then in unexpected ways.

Disc 1
Episode 1:Mild, Mild West
When a stunt goes wrong at Buffalo Bill’s Wild West Extravaganza, it’s up to Murdoch to decide whether it was murder or a tragic accident. In a camp full of sharpshooters, everyone is a suspect—even the famous Annie Oakley.

Episode 2:Snakes and Ladders
A brusque Scotland Yard detective arrives in Toronto convinced that Jack the Ripper is within his grasp. Murdoch must race against time to catch the killer—and brush up on his foxtrot—after he invites Dr. Ogden to an exclusive gala.

Episode 3:Dinosaur Fever
Famed paleontologist Barkeley Blake is in town to premiere his latest discovery, but Murdoch’s evening with Dr. Ogden is ruined when the event becomes a crime scene. While tracking the killer, the team discovers that the bone hunters are involved in blackmail, sabotage, and secret romances.

Episode 4:Houdini Whodunit
A bank robbery and two murders seem to implicate the brash young Harry Houdini. His flirtatious assistant—who happens to be Dr. Ogden’s sister—is convinced the illusionist is innocent. While the women vie for Murdoch’s attention, Inspector Brackenreid is determined to keep Houdini in chains.

Disc 2
Episode 5:The Green Muse
An "experiment" with absinthe following the murder of an escort finally brings Dr. Ogden and Murdoch together. Meanwhile, the Temperance League increases its pressure on the force to rid the city of vice—including the Music Room, a brothel frequented by Toronto’s elite. Episode 6:Shades of Grey
When a young woman is found dead in a creek, Murdoch must investigate a man from Dr. Ogden’s past. Their fledgling relationship is threatened by differences of opinion regarding abortion, and Murdoch nearly loses his objectivity while tracking those responsible for the victim’s death.

Episode 7:Big Murderer on Campus
At first glance, the murder of a physics professor seems to be the perfect crime. Murdoch tries to call on Dr. Ogden for help, but their relationship remains strained. In the meantime, Constable Crabtree has his own mystery to solve: discovering the true identity of his mother.

Disc 3
Episode 8:I, Murdoch
A young boy comes to the station with a strange report about a giant knight, but Murdoch brushes it off as a tall tale. When the boy goes missing after two bizarre murders and the appearance of a Prussian assassin, Murdoch begins to suspect something more sinister.

Episode 9:Convalescence
Murdoch, severely injured while pursuing a suspect, finds himself bedridden with two women competing for his affections: Dr. Ogden and Enid, a beautiful young widow. Constable Crabtree takes the lead on Murdoch’s case, but he can’t seem to impress Inspector Brackenreid with his detective skills.

Episode 10:Murdoch.com
Murdoch’s relationship with Enid continues to grow; when a mysterious killer begins stalking telegraph operators in Toronto, he calls on her for help. Meanwhile, Inspector Brackenreid’s quest to stop drinking has made him increasingly erratic, and Dr. Ogden begins to worry about his health.

Disc 4
Episode 11:Let Us Ask the Maiden
The death of a factory worker in Toronto’s insular Jewish ward reveals his star-crossed romance with the wealthy factory owner’s daughter. As the investigation proceeds, Murdoch learns that several of the ward’s inhabitants—rich and poor— have motives to kill.

Episode 12:Werewolves
A savage killing—seemingly committed by an animal—has some people convinced that a werewolf is on the prowl. As Murdoch searches for a logical explanation, he finds himself again torn between his feelings for Enid and his lingering affection for Dr. Ogden.

Episode 13:Anything You Can Do…
A murder investigation is alternately thwarted and aided by a mounted policeman who otherwise seems both competent and meticulous, much to Murdoch’s irritation. His annoyance increases when it seems that the interloper has impressed Dr. Ogden with more than his crime-solving skills.

I HOPE THERE WILL BE NEW SERIES AS THIS REALLY A GREAT SHOW. WISH WE HAD MORE SHOWS LIKE THIS IN THE US. I FIND BRITISH AND CANDIAN SHOWS MORE ENTERTAINING THAN WHAT WE HAVE ON AMERICAN TV. LOVE THE SHOW AND THE HISTORY THEY BRING TO IT. I HAVE TOLD MY HUSBAND I WAS NOT BORN IN THE RIGHT AGE AS I LOVE VICTORIAN THINGS.

Murdock Mysteries is a very well produced period mystery. I like the people in the series and they have hired the best actors for their parts. I have season 1 and 2 on DVD and enjoy watching them very much as I like early period mysteries like this one.

Light and Entertaining Mystery Series

We've enjoyed seasons one and two of this mystery series from Canada. Set in turn of the century Toronto, the characters are engaging, the stories light & entertaining. If you like hard boiled with a tough talking invincible hero, this isn't for you. Detective Murdoch is a shy policeman with a gentle manner, who gets around on a bicycle. His passion for trying out new scientific discoveries to solve crimes keeps the stories moving. Our only complaint is that there isn't a third season available!

Fascinating Series

An original mystery series. With the Victorian setting, it makes a pleasant change from all the modern police and lawyer shows on TV. It is interesting to compare the forensics to those of the present time.
