Extremely disappointing and not, in any way, written in the same vane as Series one through seven. Most, if not all, of the byplay and humorous characterizations have been left out and all we are getting is a typical police procedural with not very interesting villains. I've watched all eight seasons of New Tricks on DVD, so getting Season Nine is a no brainer for fans of the show. There was a major cast change this year and the series has a somewhat different chemistry with the four main stars, but overall the new addition fit in pretty well. There was less plain murder and more spy stuff in this group of episodes and I gave it a 4 star because I thought some of the shows were overly complicated. If you have never seen New Tricks you can still watch any season by itself because episodes still have a self contained plot, but it would be better to start at Season One and work your way up. Enjoy.

Episode 1:End of the Line
When DNA tests on a suspected robber prove his innocence, they also point to an earlier crime: the 15-year-old murder of an unnamed vagrant on a tube train. The trail leads the team to the victim’s posh relatives, and Brian has a run-in with the homeless community.

Episode 2:Lost in Translation
New DNA tests on charred remains from 1996 reveal family ties to a fingerprint analyst at the Home Office, drawing the team into a world of immigration loopholes and Albanian gangs. Meanwhile, Gerry takes a class in French cooking and meets a saucy woman.

Episode 3:Old Fossils
The team reinvestigates a decade-old death at the Natural History Museum. Did senior paleontologist Bernard Fletcher die from a fall, or was he murdered? To solve the case, our aging detectives must walk among dinosaurs.

Episode 4:Moving Target
A psychologist arrives to conduct a study of older men in the workplace and asks the team for help on a personal matter. Years earlier, her brother, a bicycle messenger, was the victim of a hit-and-run that left him with severe memory loss. Now he claims he was a target—and still is.

Episode 5:Object of Desire
Reinvestigating the murder of a respected antiques dealer reunites Sandra with an old flame, DCI James Larson. Will she follow her head or her heart? Meanwhile, Brian faces his own crisis at home. His wife, Esther, is behaving very oddly. Is she having an affair?

Episode 6:Setting Out Your Stall
New information sheds light on the 2009 death of a popular market trader. It seems that she was drugged and killed by a serial rapist, but with that case still ongoing, the team must look elsewhere for clues. It doesn’t help when Sandra’s mother comes for a visit.

Episode 7:The Gentleman Vanishes
In 2004, a prominent physics professor disappeared from a train bound for Paris. When his wife receives emails from someone claiming to know the reason, the team reopens the case. Then their boss, DAC Strickland, is warned off by a shadowy Whitehall figure.

Disc 3

Episode 8:Only the Brave
When a frightened young woman offers new information about the killing of the leader of a biker gang, the team agrees to take another look at the case—and perhaps prevent a second murder. A former colleague tells Sandra that she is wasting her career.

Episode 9:Half Life
A man found murdered in an alleyway seven years earlier is identified on a website about unsolved crimes. The team reinvestigates the case, but the man seems to have no past. Meanwhile, job cuts are imminent, and Brian and Gerry fear being downsized.

Episode 10:Tiger Tiger
In 2006, when a zookeeper’s body was discovered in the tiger enclosure, the death was ruled a tragic accident. New evidence now suggests it was murder. As the team tracks down clues, animal rights activist Brian clashes with the zoo’s PR department.

I've been a fan of NEW TRICKS since the first show aired on PBS, and I've collected the DVDs (both UK and US versions) as soon as available. I've noticed an occasional missing scene in the previous US DVDs, but never as many as on Series 8. I feel cheated. With only two more series being scheduled, I want to see every single minute produced not only because of the incredible main characters, but also for the guests. The late Trevor Bannister was totally eliminated from for the first show in Series 8. I don't need any shows to be edited.

New Tricks has finished its 8th season and is a big hit in the UK and US. The characterization is excellent with nuances and bold strokes as is the the writing for each episode. This is only exceeded by the cast and each of the retirees brings a colorful personality to the mix. Amanda Redman holds her own with these 3 men as she portrays a dedicated police inspector and a woman trying to deal with her father's career and suicide. I bought season 8 to see what would happen next and this series has never disappointed. The humor is both broad and subtle at times and is interwoven with a mystery that is believable and engaging.

Keep "New Tricks" coming.

When the series began, it seemed unlikely to have a long run. Definitely quirky idea, in contrast with the mainstream of British mystery/detective series. However, much like Inspector Morse, it turns out to be billiant; albeit London gritty versus Oxforshire. Just about the best of the best; it keeps one coming back, and laughing, and reflecting on the themes.

Episode 1:  Dark Chocolate

After a recent rape is linked to two unsolved attacks at a chocolate factory, the team examines all three cases and discovers even more dark secrets. Meanwhile, Gerry enlists Sandra’s help to quit smoking.

Episode 2:  Good Morning Lemmings

Celebrated graffiti artist Danny “Flak” Tyler was murdered four years ago. So why is “I Killed Flak” graffiti suddenly appearing around London? While the team focuses on Flak’s former crew members, Brian’s obsession with Twitter proves distracting.

Episode 3:  It Smells of Books

Brian goes undercover at the London Library, his “spiritual home,” to learn what really happened to a cold case victim. When university professor and book lover Richard Symes fell off the roof of his college, was it suicide or murder?

Episode 4:  Coming Out Ball

The 1983 abduction of an 18-year-old debutante is a very cold case that just got warmer. A former member of the Irish Republican Front has come forward with new information. Can Sandra and her team learn the truth?

Disc 2

Episode 5:  Dead Man Talking

When a psychic tells a dead man’s daughter that her father left unfinished business, the team reinvestigates the death of a wealthy financier. Sandra is convinced the psychic is a fraud—until he reveals a conflict involving her own late father.

Episode 6:  Fashion Victim

Eight years prior, fashion designer Ritchie Levene was stabbed to death. There were plenty of suspects, but no evidence. On the eve of a retrospective exhibition of Levene’s work, the team takes another look at the crime.

Episode 7:  Left Field

Soon after being released from jail, pedophile John Davies confesses to abducting and killing a 5-year-old boy 25 years earlier. Suspicious of Davies’s motives, the team reopens the case—to prove his innocence, not his guilt.

Disc 3

Episode 8:  Gloves Off

A talented young boxer was shot and killed 15 years ago, but the case stalled when the murder weapon was never found. Now that the gun has surfaced, the team reopens the case and learns more than they want to know about professional boxing.

Episode 9:  Where There's Smoke

When the team receives new information about a fatal fire, they are drawn into a dangerous criminal underworld. The original investigation was blocked by a wall of silence, which may be crumbling—if a witness can be trusted.

Episode 10:  The Fourth Man

DI Frank Paterson joins the team to reinvestigate a 30-year-old armed robbery during which £10 million were stolen and two guards killed. Paterson’s belief that new evidence points to high-level police corruption puts Sandra’s team in jeopardy.

We like it. We were looking for a British series to watch while waiting for more Midsommer Murders, and decided to give New Tricks a try. We're glad we did! Amanda Redman, as Detective Superintendent, Sandra Pullam, is not only beautiful but totally believable as the all-business head of the Cold Cases squad. Her crew is equally good in their roles as older semi-retired cops. After the first episode or two we could begin to recognize the distinctive personalities of each...and look forward to seeing them interact in every story. Another well done British series. A big thumbs up!

The case was a rare instance of officer in charge Ronnie Ross not getting his man. The team is convinced that both know more about the death than they claim.

Episode 3:

Hannah's mother Madeline,an ex-alcoholic G.P., is prickly but admits to paying a twenty thousand pound ransom delivered by an-ex cop who was,in fact, her married lover and Jack suspects that this was a scam to part Madeline's former husband from twenty thousand pounds. The mystery intensifies when Jack traces Hannah, now married, who states that she left her mother a note to say she was going to a pop festival where she met her husband. It intensifies even further on the discovery that Madeline already knew Hannah's husband.

Episode 4:
Sandra is approached by a tabloid editor who believes that former TV cookery queen Kitty Campbell poisoned her husband Bertie. Kitty obviously denies this but the Campbells' former assistant reveals that Bertie was a closet gay, much to Kitty's disgust. Esther Lane collapses and Brian realizes the extent to which he depends on her, the more so as, whilst watching archive film of the Campbells, she discovers the key to the mystery.

Episode 5:

Episode 6:
The team is supposed to be investigating the conviction of Stanley Ackerman, whose wife is continually protesting in front of the station. But having lost £10,000 in a poker game, Gerry is given the possibility of wiping out the debt when the winner asks him to investigate his father's murder 20 years ago. The man, Joe Jacobs, had been attacked on the street and it was put down to a mugging with no arrests. Gerry tries to investigate the case on his own but his colleagues, including Supt. Sandra Pullman, are soon on to him. Jacobs was in debt to bookie George Morton but they determine that his death was related to the kidnapping of a champion greyhound racing dog.

Episode 7:
The UCOS team investigate the kidnapping of two 10-year old boys over twenty years ago. Brian thinks it may be related to a current spate of kidnappings. What they know is that two boys, Daryl and Alan, were taken while fishing at an old pit. A few days later, they managed to escape unharmed, but the police never made an arrest in the case. One of the survivors agrees to undergo hypnosis that reveals some additional clues. They soon learn that others fishing at the pit were either threatened or attacked over the years, including a champion fisherman who had held the record for catching the largest carp. As Brian spends more and more time by himself fishing at the pit, his wife Esther seeks Sandra Pullman's advice.

Episode 8:
The team investigates the murder of an unidentified young woman who was found in the woods some 18 years previously. The original pathologist on the case, Professor Mears, has kept all of the evidence in the case and has longed for it to be re-opened. He has even given the girl a name, "Millicent". Working with what little information they have - the young woman had red hair and had syphilis - they first seek to identify the girl. She was also cut up by an expert carver. Throughout this time, Gerry Standing is going a bit mad as he has given up gambling but every horse he would have bet on, has won.

This was a gift for my 77 year old father who loves British detective movies. He'd never heard of this series, but I watch it here in California and took a chance this Father's Day. He's now a fan! He gets their humor and loves their attitude.

I caught one e[osode of the BBC production and found the four characters in the story to be my new best friends. Show is humorous and becomes more so as you get to know the characters. Very Enjoyable.

One of my very favorites. Good stories, good characters, good acting, human, full of irony, funny, sad at times. No gratuitous sex, profanity or violence.

It is fun to me to see the "old folks" like us outsmart some of the others. I had seen some of these on tv several years ago and thought my husband might enjoy also. He does not hear well and they speak rapidly. If there is cc on this dvd I could not locate it. We have seen the first two episodes. I liked them. Maybe he will enjoy the next one. This is first time I have ordered from Acorn. I also ordered Foyle's War. It is excellent. And I ordered a "cat-toy" that my friend entertains her cat with.

Great fun

Saw some of the New Tricks episodes on WETA UK public television. Wanted to see all the episodes from start to finish. Even though Season 1 was on backorder, I received it within 2 weeks, in time for Christmas gift. Great service. Thanks.

This first season set has the pilot episode which shows how the team was formed. All were apparently black sheep. But the chemistry between them is perfect, which makes this such a wonderful series.

This was a new venture as I bought this DVD off the review in the Acorn brochure. I was not disappointed as the series has turned out to be witty, clever and I am now hooked on this and will be investing in the following Series. I was also pleased how quickly the DVD came, originally listed back ordered it arrived before the date it was expected to come into stock.

This show is Fantastic. The dialogue is great. And they don't screw up the program with MUSIC. Seems like a lot of programs have to equate background music with sincerity or situation. Meanwhile they override the actual spoken word of the actors. But aside from all of the above, this is a new way for a crime drama show. Love it.
