Disc 1
In the opening series, D.C.I. Tennison seizes the opportunity to head a murder investigation—something she should have done long ago, had she not been passed over by her male superiors time and again. With a suspect already identified and her own team openly hostile, she uncovers errors and conflicting facts that point to a cover-up within the force. Is this a single murder or the latest act of a serial killer? Tennison refuses to back off the investigation.

Disc 2
Tennison has proven herself and won her colleagues’ grudging respect. When she is assigned to head a murder inquiry in the African Caribbean community, it seems further evidence that her star is on the rise. Suddenly she’s in the thick of a racial controversy, working with a black detective who is also her former lover (guest star Colin Salmon, Keen Eddie), and dealing with prejudice in the field and on her team. Tennison begins to wonder if she’s been handed a plum case or hung out to dry.

Disc 3
DCI Tennison has been transferred to a new station and a new assignment: getting prostitutes off the streets of Soho. But when a 17-year-old rent boy is burned to death, her superiors aren’t keen on her investigating the murder. The victim was a regular at a center for homeless kids run by Edward Parker-Jones, the darling of the department. As if matters aren’t thorny enough, a former lover comes to town and causes Tennison to question her life.

Discs 4 & 5
The newly promoted Detective Superintendent Tennison moves among stations to head high-profile cases for the Area Major Investigation Team. A wrenching personal decision colors her search for an abducted toddler in The Lost Child. In Inner Circles, the manager of an exclusive country club is found dead in his home, and fingers point to the residents of a local housing project. The Scent of Darkness finds Tennison happy in her private life, but strained at work. New murders cast doubt on a case she solved previously, to the delight of an old adversary.

Disc 6
Detective Superintendent Tennison relocates to the Greater Manchester Police for a stint as a community relations officer at local schools. When she complains to her new boss, DCS Ballinger, he assigns her to the shooting case of a young drug dealer. Tennison pegs a corrupt local drug lord as the killer, but somehow he stays one step ahead of her investigation. Is he getting inside information? Meanwhile, Tennison engages in a romantic affair that complicates her life even more.

Disc 7
Tennison is being pressured to retire by her male colleagues. Instead, she takes on a high-profile case, the torture and murder of a young Bosnian refugee. When her prime suspect turns out to be a "minor" war criminal, Tennison meets resistance from her superiors, struggles with ambitious underlings, and uncovers buried secrets. Her career now at risk, she realizes she has little else left in her life and everything to fight for.

Discs 8 & 9
In the final series, Detective Superintendent Tennison is pushing 60 and facing the death of her father. Alcohol, loneliness, and the job have taken their toll, but she is determined to end her exemplary career by solving one more case: the brutal murder of schoolgirl Sallie Sturdy. Weeks away from retirement and struggling to stay afloat, Tennison forms an emotional bond with Sallie’s closest friend, Penny Philips, and unwittingly puts the teenager’s life in danger.

Detective Jane Tennison is one gritty broad! Despite her personal flaws she is a force to be reckoned with. I certainly would not want her persuing me. Having watched the whole series 3 times since I purchased it, I understand why the series received so many awards. I prefer PRIME SUSPECT over the traditional American television detective series. I only wish there were more seasons!
