Introduced in 1966, retired in 1998, the Lockheed SR-71 strategic reconnaissance aircraft flew fast and high. On July 28, 1976, “Al” Joersz, a former combat fighter pilot in Vietnam who earned three Distinguished Flying Crosses, set the world absolute speed record of 2,193.167 miles per hour piloting a Blackbird.
