Agatha Christie's Marple: Geraldine McEwan Collection
Geraldine McEwan (The Magdalene Sisters, Mapp & Lucia) effortlessly captures the sly wit and keen observations of Agatha Christie’s beloved spinster sleuth in these 12 full-length mysteries. Prim and proper in her smart tweed suits and matching hats, Miss Marple is often overlooked by the police and underestimated by criminals. But she proves her mettle time and again, solving cases that leave even the most experienced professionals flummoxed. These lavish adaptations are filled with rich period detail and feature top guest stars, including Jane Seymour, Joanna Lumley, Derek Jacobi, Zoe Wanamaker, Eileen Atkins, Anthony Andrews, Peter Davison, Timothy Dalton, John Hannah, Keeley Hawes, Greg Wise, Francesca Annis, and Juliet Stevenson. "Irresistible" --TV Guide.

Agatha Christie's Marple: Series 5
Eyes sparkling and tweeds impeccable, Julia McKenzie (Cranford, Notes on a Scandal) returns as Agatha Christie’s spinster sleuth in three new mysteries set in 1950s England. Murder is afoot, and Miss Marple is up to the task of determining whodunit. She may look like a pensioner, but she doesn’t miss a clue on the way to solving heinous crimes, whether the weapon is a gun, a cocktail, or the color blue. Each story unfolds against a rich background of grand English estates, gorgeous scenery, and post-WWII period detail.

Julia McKenzie proves “delightful to watch” (Los Angeles Times), and she’s supported by a stellar cast of veteran British actors including Lindsay Duncan, Joanna Lumley, Hugh Bonneville, Edward Fox, Caroline Quentin, Jonas Armstrong, Sharon Small, Kevin McNally, and Toby Stephens.

Agatha Christie's Marple, Series
Donning the trademark tweeds as if they were made for her, the marvelous Julia McKenzie (Cranford, Notes on a Scandal) assumes the Marple mantle in four gripping new adaptations of Christie mysteries. With her ladylike manners and modest appearance, Dame Agatha’s spinster sleuth blends into the background of fashionable society. However, her razor-sharp mind and no-nonsense view of human nature make her a formidable foe to evildoers, cracking the cases that even the professionals can’t solve.

Picturesque English scenery, grand estates, witty scripts, and lavish post-WWII period detail provide the perfect frame for "frighteningly fun mysteries" (Entertainment Weekly). The stellar supporting cast includes Matthew Macfadyen, Rupert Graves, Anna Chancellor, Jemma Redgrave, Helen Baxendale, Brian Cox, Prunella Scales, Warren Clarke, Natalie Dormer, Rafe Spall, Kenneth Cranham, Samantha Bond, and Joan Collins. "Totally, unexpectedly fun" --E! Online.

Agatha Christie's Marple, Series 3
Though they might be fooled by her delicate exterior, criminals underestimate Agatha Christie's mild-mannered spinster sleuth at their peril! In the expert care of acclaimed actress Geraldine McEwan (Vanity Fair, The Magdalene Sisters), the beloved Miss Marple takes on new vibrance as a "worldly lady with a past, full of fun and mischief" (London Times).

In her golden years, Miss Marple blends into the scenery of her elegant surroundings. All the better to observe the foibles of human nature that lead to evil -- and to surprise one and all when she solves crimes that baffle the professionals. Rich with period detail, these all-new adaptations feature stellar supporting casts, including Richard E. Grant, Amanda Burton, Eileen Atkins, Saffron Burrows, Greg Wise, Martine McCutcheon, Francesca Annis, Peter Davison, Jane Seymour, and Juliet Stevenson. "Spectacular" -- DVD Talk

Agatha Christie's Marple, Series 2
Four all-new, full-length mysteries bring you a Miss Marple like no other. Geraldine McEwan (Vanity Fair, The Magdalene Sisters) returns as the spinster sleuth, as shrewd and sagacious as ever. Breathing new life into Agatha Christie’s novels, these intricately plotted and thoroughly engaging whodunits feature the richly detailed settings, lush cinematography, and imaginative screenplays that won Series 1 overwhelming critical acclaim and an Emmy® nomination.

McEwan imbues Miss Marple with a kindly sparkle and sly wit that prove "irresistible," raves TV Guide. "Not your mother’s Miss Marple," says the Associated Press. Sterling supporting casts that include Anthony Andrews, Michael Brandon, James D’Arcy, Geraldine Chaplin, Timothy Dalton, Frances de la Tour, Sophia Myles, Ken Russell, and Greta Scacchi further enrich this 21st century celebration of Agatha Christie’s most beloved heroine.

Agatha Christie's Marple, Series 1
She's back! Proper, demure, and sharp as a tack, Agatha Christie's beloved Miss Marple returns to the limelight in sparkling new adaptations of four classic Christie novels. Geraldine McEwan (The Magdalene Sisters, Mapp & Lucia) is the ladylike sleuth, a wispy senior citizen who blows the police professionals out of the water with her keen insight and shrewdly analytical nature. Fearless and uncommonly wise to the worst in human nature, Marple has lived a long time-and she's paid attention.

As seen on the PBS Mystery! series, these lavish 21st-century productions are rich in post-WWII period atmosphere and delicious Christie wit, with star-studded casts that include Joanna Lumley, Derek Jacobi, Tara Fitzgerald, Ian Richardson, Janet McTeer, Zok Wanamaker, Simon Callow, James Fox, John Hannah, and Celia Imrie.

Agatha Christie's Marple: The Pale Horse
Miss Marple (Julia McKenzie, Cranford) receives a mysterious list of names from her friend Father Gorman, who sent it moments before he was brutally murdered on a London street. She soon discovers that people on the list are dying. A clue leads her to the Pale Horse Inn in Hampshire, a spooky establishment run by three modern-day witches. As she closes in on the truth, one of the guests is found dead in his bed, and Miss Marple learns that her own life may be in danger. This "quintessential Agatha Christie murder mystery" (The Times, U.K.) features a star-studded cast including Oscar® nominee Pauline Collins (Shirley Valentine), Sarah Alexander (Coupling), JJ Feild (Northanger Abbey), and Bill Paterson (Traffik).

Agatha Christie: The Pale Horse
In Agatha Christie's deepest venture into the occult, writer Mark Easterbrook is accused of murdering a priest. As he sets out to prove his innocence, he discovers that a series of deaths, seemingly from natural causes, may be connected to witchcraft and a strange trio of sisters!

Sara from IL on 3/25/2013 12:00:00 AM wrote:

Geraldine McEwan is the quintessential Miss Marple in that she projects the "essence" of Agatha Christie's character in her books. I've seen 3 actresses play the title character, and of them all, ONLY Geraldine McEwan would I feel confident to approach on a street corner. Which is what most people would feel with the book character. She's friendly, approachable, and nosey - 3 characteristics neither of the other 2 actress' protrayals exhibit. McEwan's "sparkle" in her eye that turns dark when she speaks of the wickedness of murder, while not found (by me, at least) in the books, is perfection for the part. That as much as anything brings substance to her 'little old lady.' Love her, love the DVDs.

How could it NOT be good? Superbly shot/produced!! The only thing I would change is the liberties they took with Miss Marple's habits like allowing her to drink alcohol and go on adventures I doubt Dame Agatha would allow. BUT, it's all in good fun. I wish there were more than 5 series so I could buy more!! Thank you!

I am an avid fan of Agatha Christie's works ... I was very pleased to find this series on Netflix and decided to watch ... Although the the episodes did vary somewhat from the actual books about Miss Marple, they did retain the essence which I accepted ... It was sort of an "update" to a more contemporary "setting" so-to-speak ... I am completely satisfied with the series ... Geraldine McEwan did a super job in portraying Miss Marple ... Christie is brilliant because you can put Miss Marple into a movie where she wasn't even a character in the book and it still works beautifully and keeps you guessing or at least intrigued and interested until the end because no matter how many times a Christie classic is redone well it is a wonderful thing! Look at Margaret Rutherford and David Suchet in Hickory Dickory Dock, decades apart as different detectives and each adaptation still perfect! Christie's Pale Horse in the 60's was refreshingly 'modern'. Marple's presence twisted the plot. Redo "Ten Little Indians"!
