In this series we meet George Gently, a man who chooses not to become embittered by the murder of his wife. He transfers to the North of England where he continues his police work, encumbered by an absolute twerp of a sergeant. As the series evolves, Gently gradually influences his sergeant for the better.
The series portrays the times with great accuracy, from the beehive hairdos of the fashionable women to the attitudes and values of of that era.

I purchased George Gently Series 1 looking for something a little different in the mystery department. I was also influenced by the fact that Martin Shaw plays George Gently. The 3 episodes in this series were well acted and kept me guessing the solution until the end. Besides the women's hairstyles and dress,& the gratuitous references to birth control, however, it wasn't so easy to identify the time period as the 60's. I sm definitely interested in seeing more of this series.

George Gently is an excellent detective series. I've been watching this series of imported programs on my local PBS station, this past winter. That's why I took advantage of the special offer to purchase the first of the series when it was offered at a discounted price. Thank you, Acorn.

I love this series which was new to me a year or so ago and was delighted with the great price Acorn offered. I was impressed with the prompt arrival of the set. I ordered it as a Valentine's Day surprise for a friend so we have not yet opened and viewed it.

It would have been helpful to have had the cases marked in order. I took a guess and watched Gently Go Man first, which worked out, but noting disc 1,2,3 would have been much better. The series is well done and requires close attention to follow the plot.
Good British mystery.

I discovered George Gently on the Acorn site. Set in the sixties, the police work depends on the intuition/intelligence of the police officers and not as much on forensics. I judge shows on the characters, and these are very well portrayed.

Some very interesting stories. The 1960's don't seem so long ago until you watch these movies. Makes you think "did we really believe/act like that?"
